Kalamkari or block-printing is a kind of traditional print that is applied to fabrics by hand.
Kalamkari is one of the main handicrafts of Isfahan city. The handicrafts of Isfahan are so famous that this city was chosen as the world crafts city by the council of handicrafts in 2015. Block-printing, which is called “Kalamkari” in Farsi, is one of the art products with a very ancient history.
Some believe this craft has been originated from India. Back in the past, when they wanted to apply the prints on fabrics such as cotton, linen, or silk, they painted them by hands, using brush and herbal colors. Because of the elaborate and skillful work of the masters, this crafts was called “Kalamkari” which refers to the word “Qalam” meaning brush in the Farsi language. Gradually, because of the long time process of painting by brush, wooden blocks replaced the painting brushes because they were easier to use and were time-saving.
Wooden blocks became the first and most important step of making kalamkari prints. To make the blocks as a stamp, first, the desired shape and design is drawn on sketch paper. Then it is separated into single-color layers based on the color. Then every design is carved into blocks of pear or hawthorn woods. Most of the time four blocks are created for each design and these fabrics usually have four colors.
